What Makes a Dental Problem an Emergency?

February 5, 2017

Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell whether or not your dental concern is actually an emergency that requires fast and efficient treatment. Some patients make the mistake of ignoring symptoms, putting off treatment until it’s too late. Others may never even know that their problem was an emergency at all, which can again lead to a bigger problem down the road.

Here are a few of the symptoms that should prompt you to see emergency dental treatment at Austin Cosmetic:

  • The biggest motivator to seek emergency treatment. Whether it’s a cracked tooth or just an unknown pain radiating in the mouth or jaw, pain is an indicator that there may be something wrong. It can range from an infection, to nerve damage, to an allergic reaction, to a number of other root causes. Even mild pain can mean seeing a dentist as soon as possible if it doesn’t disappear within an hour.
  • Along with pain, swelling is often a sign that there has either been an injury, or an infection. Tissue inflames and swells when a disease is detected, to halt its spread through the tissue, and then to the rest of the body afterward. It is often one of the surest signs that you have an oral abscess or other form of infection. If you are experiencing swelling in the jaw, or if your gum tissue feels red, tight, and painful, consider seeing us at Lakeway.
  • Chips and breaks. Depending on the severity of the damage, an emergency treatment may help to both reduce pain, and to ensure that the damaged tooth or teeth aren’t lost through further damage. Teeth rely on their entire structure to deal with daily activities like chewing. When a weak point occurs, it’s only a matter of time before the entire structure falls apart. Cosmetic chips are less serious, but still may have an impact on your image.
