FLUOROSIS
AUSTIN PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY
Dental Fluorosis is characterized by the appearance of white spots or lines on the teeth caused by excessive and prolonged exposure to fluoride. Especially during the time when teeth are developing beneath the gums. While the risk of developing fluorosis exists until roughly age 8, it will not adversely impact your child’s overall health.
HOW TO AVOID FLUOROSIS
- Breastfeeding can be beneficial
- Supervise children when they are brushing their teeth
- Brush your child’s teeth twice daily when they do come in
- The ADA recommends avoiding mouthwash with fluoride before age 6
- Be aware of water quality reports and amounts of fluoride
MORE ABOUT FLUOROSIS
While fluoride seems to be getting a lot of negative attention, and some people do have intolerances and allergies to fluoride, the presence of fluoride in your child’s drinking water, toothpaste, or formula will not physically harm them. While severe fluorosis may cause pitting, fluoride helps strengthen your child’s tooth enamel. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand that you only want the best for your child, and we are here to help you navigate your way through the fluoride debate and ensure the overall and oral health of your child.
