Smiling is pretty much the answer to everything. If ever life seems to be on top of you, if you’re looking for a way to advance in your career, if you want to do better in your love life… just smile.
That might sound a little cheesy and a little too ‘Disney’ but it’s actually very true for all kinds of reasons. When you smile, the world really does smile with you and when you read on you’ll see why this is true from a scientific perspective even…
Smiling and Your Emotions
As soon as you smile the world seems like a better place. This is due to something called ‘facial feedback’ which essentially causes our brain to produce hormones and neurotransmitters that are in accord with the expression we pull (so likewise, frowning will make you feel blue). When you smile this causes the release of serotonin and endorphins and as a result you feel happy and even pain decreases (serotonin is a natural analgesic).
In studies it has been shown that even ‘tricking’ someone into smiling (getting them to hold a pen in their teeth for instance) can lead to measurable improvements in mood.
Smiling and Everyone Else
What’s more, when you smile, this causes other people to feel happier.
There are a number of possible explanations for this but one is to do with what are known as ‘mirror neurons’. Mirror neurons are brain cells that essentially moderate our ability to empathize. These fire when we see something happen to someone else which is actually why we tend to wince when watching boxing for instance.
As a result, smiling at someone causes them to release the very same happiness hormones. This in turn means that they will feel more positive and they’ll come to associate those good feelings with being around you. Thus, just smiling more can make you a more popular person as people want to spend more time with you.
Smiling and Your Prospects
As you can imagine, being more popular is a great way to advance in your career and to do better in dating as well. When it comes to chatting up members of the opposite sex, you can pretty much think of smiling as a lethal weapon in your arsenal that will have a very positive effect.
When it comes to our jobs, smiling also makes us look more attractive and more confident. This in turn results in better career opportunities – while it may seem shallow studies show that more attractive people tend to have higher salaries (and of course confidence is an asset that employers look for.
The Law of Attraction
In general too, because you feel more confident about yourself when you smile, you will find that you act more confidently. In turn, other people will then have more confidence in you and the end result will be that you end up with more opportunities, more respect and more results.
