Wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to come in and frequently cause problems when there isn’t enough room for them to erupt properly. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can lead to crowding, infection, damage to neighboring teeth, and significant discomfort. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry handles wisdom teeth removals in-office, including partial impactions, so most patients never need to be sent to an outside oral surgeon. We offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, and our team will provide detailed recovery instructions before you leave. Bone grafts. When a tooth is extracted or has been missing for some time, the surrounding jawbone can begin to deteriorate without the stimulation of a tooth root. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, we routinely perform bone grafts at the time of extraction using a bone plug for site preservation, minimizing the need for more extensive grafting later. Frenectomies and tongue tie releases. A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes or modifies the frenum, the small band of tissue connecting the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the surrounding structures. Do I have to get my wisdom teeth removed?+
Not always, but it depends on your specific situation. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, properly aligned, and easy to clean don’t necessarily need to be removed. However, impacted, partially erupted, or crowded wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth over time. What’s the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?+
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline and can be removed in one piece using standard instruments. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted, broken at the gumline, or otherwise difficult to access, requiring an incision in the gum tissue and sometimes the removal of some surrounding bone. Both types of extractions are performed in-office at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, and both are performed with local anesthesia and sedation options available to keep you comfortable throughout.
How painful is wisdom teeth removal?+
The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the removal. Some soreness, swelling, and stiffness in the jaw are normal in the days following surgery and are manageable with over-the-counter pain relief in most cases. How long is recovery after a tooth extraction?+
