MORE THAN A CLEANING

What is comprehensive dentistry?

Comprehensive dentistry covers the full range of preventive and restorative care that keeps your teeth and gums healthy over the long term. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, Drs. Bradford and Patel bring a cosmetic sensibility to every aspect of comprehensive care, meaning your smile doesn’t just function well, it looks great too. Routine checkups, digital X-rays, cleanings, fillings, and crowns are all part of what we offer, alongside same-day technology that lets us handle most restorative needs in a single visit. Whether you’re coming in for a scheduled cleaning or following up on a concern, our small, tight-knit team in downtown Austin makes sure every visit feels personal and unhurried. We believe preventive care is the foundation of a beautiful smile, and we’re here to make staying on top of it as convenient as possible for busy patients in and around downtown Austin.

WHY COMPREHENSIVE DENTISTRY

The benefits of comprehensive dentistry

Consistent preventive care is one of the most impactful investments you can make in your overall health. Catching small problems early, before they become costly or painful, saves you time, money, and stress down the road.

  • Prevention over intervention: Regular checkups and cleanings allow our team to spot issues like cavities, gum disease, and early signs of decay before they require more complex treatment. Staying ahead of problems is always easier than treating them after the fact.
  • A complete picture of your oral health: Every comprehensive dentistry visit at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry includes digital X-rays and a thorough clinical exam so we have an accurate, up-to-date view of what’s happening beneath the surface. That complete picture allows us to make informed recommendations and catch concerns early.
  • Care that connects to your cosmetic goals: Our focus on cosmetic dentistry means that even routine care is delivered with an eye toward aesthetics. If there’s an opportunity to improve the look of your smile alongside your comprehensive treatment, we’ll always let you know what’s possible.

THE PROCESS

The comprehensive dentistry process

1
Your first visit
New patients at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry begin with a comprehensive exam that includes digital X-rays, an iTero scan, and a full clinical evaluation. Our team takes the time to review your dental history, understand your goals, and give you a clear picture of the current state of your oral health. If you need a cleaning, we’ll take care of that during the same visit whenever possible.
2
Your personalized treatment plan
Based on your exam findings, we’ll put together a treatment plan that addresses any immediate concerns and outlines recommendations for ongoing care. We’ll walk you through everything in plain language, explain the priority of each item, and answer any questions you have before any treatment begins. There are no surprises here.
3
Ongoing care and maintenance
Consistent preventive care is what keeps small issues from becoming big ones. Our team will recommend a recall schedule that fits your needs and make it easy to stay on track. Whether you’re coming back for a routine cleaning or a follow-up on restorative work, you’ll always be seen by a team that knows you and your smile.

MORE ABOUT COMPREHENSIVE DENTISTRY

Our comprehensive dentistry services

Dental exams and cleanings. A professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing alone can’t reach, while a comprehensive exam gives our team a detailed look at the health of your teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. We use digital X-rays to get a complete picture and identify any concerns that may not be visible to the naked eye. Regular exams and cleanings are the cornerstone of a healthy smile and the best way to catch problems before they become bigger issues. We recommend most patients come in every six months, though our team will advise you on the schedule that makes the most sense for your individual needs.

Digital X-rays. Digital X-rays are a standard part of every new patient visit and routine exam at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry. Compared to traditional film X-rays, digital imaging produces clearer, more detailed images with significantly less radiation exposure. They allow our team to detect decay between teeth, assess bone levels, evaluate the roots of teeth, and identify issues that aren’t visible during a clinical exam. The images are available instantly and can be reviewed with you chairside so you always understand what we’re seeing.

Tooth-colored fillings. When a cavity develops, the goal is to remove the decay and restore the tooth as quickly and conservatively as possible. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry uses tooth-colored composite resin fillings that blend seamlessly with your natural tooth structure, so there’s no metal and no noticeable difference in your smile. The procedure is straightforward and typically completed in a single appointment. If you have older metal amalgam fillings you’d like to replace, we can discuss that as well during your visit.

Same-day crowns. When a tooth is too damaged for a filling but doesn’t need to be extracted, a crown is often the best way to restore its strength and appearance. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, we use CEREC technology to design, mill, and place your custom crown in a single appointment, so there’s no waiting on a lab, no temporary crown to manage, and no second visit to block off on your calendar. Our CEREC crowns are milled from high-quality ceramic and zirconia materials that are matched to the shade of your natural teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. For downtown Austin patients who can’t afford to spend multiple days in a dental chair, same-day crown technology is one of the most practical advantages our practice offers. Whether you’re dealing with a cracked tooth, a failing old crown, or significant decay, we can often have you fully restored before you head home.

Night guards. If you grind or clench your teeth at night, a custom night guard can protect your teeth from the wear and damage that builds up over time. Bruxism, as teeth grinding is clinically known, can lead to cracked teeth, worn enamel, jaw soreness, and headaches if left unaddressed. Our team will evaluate your bite and the condition of your teeth to determine whether a night guard is appropriate for you. Custom-fitted guards are far more comfortable and effective than over-the-counter options and are made specifically for your bite.

Soft-tissue laser therapy. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry uses soft-tissue laser technology for a range of procedures involving the gums and surrounding tissue. Laser therapy is precise, minimally invasive, and typically results in less discomfort and faster healing than traditional techniques. It plays a role in everything from treating gum disease to performing aesthetic procedures like gum contouring and frenectomies. If your treatment plan includes a soft-tissue procedure, our team will walk you through how the laser is used and what to expect during and after the appointment.

“I flew to Austin to see Dr.Patel and his wonderful team for veneers. The whole experience was wonderful. Julie was present and helped with both the placement of my temporaries and permanent veneers. The whole process was throughly explained to me and I felt 100% comfortable and confident the entire time. The office recommended hotels and restaurants for me. My new smile is so amazing and I am thrilled with the results. Definitely worth the trip. Dr.Patel’s attention to detail was top notch. 10/10 do recommend.”

“Dr. Patel and his staff are amazing! Julie assisted during both the temporary and permanent application of my veneers and she made my experience very personable with her genuine kindness. Dr. Patel went above and beyond the ensure I was 100% happy and satisfied with the results of my new smile. Everyone was truly great.
I was missing my left lateral incisor and had a right peg lateral. They were able to transform my smile with a mix of a porcelain bridge, crown, and porcelain veneers. Their lab was also able to add a bit of transparency to my new smile to result in a beautiful natural look. My smile is white, bright, and seamless.
They provide patients with a new water flosser, Philips toothbrush, night guards, and whitening care. I traveled from Massachusetts and I don’t think I would have been as satisfied elsewhere. Communication is always easy, fast, and efficient even from across the country. All staff members are very knowledgeable regarding the dental work provided. I’ve never felt so confident and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

FAQ

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Have questions about comprehensive dental care or what to expect at your visit? Browse the answers below or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

How often should I get a professional teeth cleaning?+

Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning every six months. However, patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or other risk factors may need to come in more frequently. Our team will evaluate your oral health and recommend the recall schedule that makes the most sense for you.

What’s the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?+

A regular cleaning, also called a prophylaxis, removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is appropriate for patients with generally healthy gums. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, goes further below the gumline to remove buildup from the root surfaces of the teeth and is recommended when there are signs of gum disease. Our team will assess your gum health at each visit and let you know if a deeper level of cleaning is needed.

Does dental insurance cover routine cleanings?+

Austin Cosmetic Dentistry is a fee-for-service practice and does not accept dental insurance. We’ll always be upfront about the cost of your care so you can make informed decisions about your treatment. Our team is happy to discuss pricing during your visit or when you call to schedule.

What happens during a dental checkup and cleaning?+

A routine checkup at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry includes a clinical exam of your teeth and gums, digital X-rays as needed, and a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. Our team will review your X-rays with you, note any areas of concern, and discuss any recommended treatment. New patients also receive an iTero scan as part of their comprehensive intake.

Can teeth cleanings help prevent gum disease?+

Yes, and this is one of the most important reasons to stay consistent with your cleaning schedule. Professional cleanings remove the tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can’t eliminate on their own, and tartar is a primary driver of gum disease. Catching early signs of gum inflammation at a routine visit is far easier to manage than treating advanced periodontal disease down the road.
