EMERGENCY DENTISTRY
What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation causing significant pain, damage, or risk of infection that can’t reasonably wait for a routine appointment. Cracked or broken teeth, lost crowns, severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, and dental abscesses all qualify, and all of them get worse the longer they go untreated. What starts as a cracked tooth can become an infection. What starts as an infection can threaten neighboring teeth and your overall health. Getting seen quickly isn’t just about relieving pain, it’s about protecting the long-term health of your smile. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, Drs. Bradford and Patel reserve same-day appointments specifically for patients dealing with emergencies. Between them, they bring decades of experience in general and restorative dentistry, which means most urgent situations can be diagnosed and treated right here in our downtown Austin office, without sending you somewhere else in the middle of a crisis.

THE PROCESS
What to do in a dental emergency
Call us right away
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, call our office as soon as possible. Our team will ask a few quick questions about what you’re experiencing to help us prepare for your visit and ensure we have everything ready when you arrive. We do our best to accommodate same-day appointments for patients in pain.
Come in for an assessment
When you arrive, our team will take X-rays and perform a thorough evaluation of the affected area. We’ll explain exactly what we’re seeing, walk you through your treatment options, and make sure you understand the plan before anything begins. There’s no rushing through the conversation, even in an emergency.
Get treated and recover
Depending on the nature of your emergency, treatment may be completed the same day, whether that’s a crown replacement, an extraction, a root canal, or another procedure. If additional follow-up is needed, we’ll schedule that before you leave and make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable recovery.
MORE ABOUT EMERGENCY DENTISTRY
Common dental emergencies
Severe tooth pain. Sudden, intense tooth pain is one of the most common reasons patients call us for a same-day appointment. Pain of that nature is often a sign of an underlying issue, such as a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or an infection, that needs to be addressed before it progresses. Our team will take X-rays and assess the area to identify the source of the pain and recommend the most appropriate treatment. Depending on what’s found, that may mean a same-day filling, a root canal, an extraction, or another restorative procedure. The goal is always to get you out of pain as quickly as possible and give you a clear path forward.
Cracked or broken teeth. A cracked or broken tooth can range from a minor chip to a significant fracture that threatens the health of the tooth. Either way, it’s important to get it evaluated quickly to prevent bacteria from entering the tooth and causing further damage. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, we can assess the severity of the break and provide same-day treatment when possible, including same-day CEREC crowns for teeth that need full coverage to stay protected. For cosmetic concerns following a chip or crack, we can also discuss bonding or other restorative options during your visit.
Lost or damaged crowns. Losing a crown, or discovering that one has cracked or broken, can be both uncomfortable and alarming. Fortunately, it’s one of the most straightforward emergencies we handle at Austin Cosmetic Dentistry. Thanks to our CEREC same-day crown technology, we can often replace a lost or damaged crown in a single visit, with no temporary and no waiting on a lab. Call us as soon as possible so we can assess the tooth and get your restoration back in place before the underlying structure is compromised.
Tooth extractions. When a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, a prompt extraction is often the safest way to eliminate pain and protect the surrounding teeth. Our team performs both simple and surgical extractions in our downtown Austin office, and in many cases, a bone graft can be placed at the same time to preserve the site for a future implant. We take every measure to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for patients who need it. After your extraction, we’ll walk you through your recovery and discuss tooth replacement options when you’re ready.
Root canals. Root canals have a reputation that doesn’t reflect the reality of modern dentistry. When a tooth becomes infected or severely decayed, a root canal is often the best way to save it and eliminate the pain caused by the infection. Our team performs root canals in-office and prioritizes making the experience as comfortable as possible from start to finish. If you’re experiencing persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, or swelling near a tooth, call us right away. The sooner an infection is addressed, the better the outcome for the tooth.

Dr. Patel is nothing short of amazing! He is super attentive to your wishes and will go above and beyond to deliver the best results! I had my upper teeth cosmetically improved with porcelain veneers and from the moment I saw Dr. Patel for the first impression appointment, I knew I made the right choice. I love my new smile and can’t stop taking pictures! Thank you Dr. Patel and team for making this experience so seamless and comfortable!”

“I flew to Austin to see Dr.Patel and his wonderful team for veneers. The whole experience was wonderful. Julie was present and helped with both the placement of my temporaries and permanent veneers. The whole process was throughly explained to me and I felt 100% comfortable and confident the entire time. The office recommended hotels and restaurants for me. My new smile is so amazing and I am thrilled with the results. Definitely worth the trip. Dr.Patel’s attention to detail was top notch. 10/10 do recommend.”

“Dr. Patel and his staff are amazing! Julie assisted during both the temporary and permanent application of my veneers and she made my experience very personable with her genuine kindness. Dr. Patel went above and beyond the ensure I was 100% happy and satisfied with the results of my new smile. Everyone was truly great.
I was missing my left lateral incisor and had a right peg lateral. They were able to transform my smile with a mix of a porcelain bridge, crown, and porcelain veneers. Their lab was also able to add a bit of transparency to my new smile to result in a beautiful natural look. My smile is white, bright, and seamless.
They provide patients with a new water flosser, Philips toothbrush, night guards, and whitening care. I traveled from Massachusetts and I don’t think I would have been as satisfied elsewhere. Communication is always easy, fast, and efficient even from across the country. All staff members are very knowledgeable regarding the dental work provided. I’ve never felt so confident and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

Dr. Patel And His Staff Were All Very Kind, Caring, Gentle, (Asking Me “Are You Ok?” Several Times During The Treatment To Ensure That I Wasn’t In Pain Or Uncomfortable) Attentive, Funny And The List Could Literally Go On Because They Were That Amazing. I Am Beyond Satisfied With My Veneers I Cannot Thank Him And His Entire Staff Enough. I Have The Smile Of My Dreams. FAQ
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies as a dental emergency or have questions about what to expect, you’ll find answers to the most common questions below.
What counts as a dental emergency?+
A dental emergency is any situation causing significant pain, bleeding, swelling, or structural damage that can’t reasonably wait for a routine appointment. Common examples include severe toothaches, cracked or knocked-out teeth, lost or broken crowns, abscesses, and dental injuries from an accident or fall. If you’re unsure whether your situation warrants a same-day call, err on the side of calling us. We’d much rather help you assess the situation over the phone than have you wait and risk the problem getting worse.
Do you offer same-day emergency dental appointments?+
Yes. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry reserves availability for same-day emergency appointments. Call our office as early in the day as possible and our team will work to get you in. We understand that being in pain is urgent, and we treat it that way.
What should I do if I have a knocked-out tooth?+
If a tooth has been knocked out, time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket or keep it moist in a container of milk while you make your way to our office. Call us immediately so we’re ready when you arrive. The sooner we can see you, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
How much does an emergency dental visit cost?+
The cost of an emergency visit depends on the nature and complexity of the treatment needed. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry is a fee-for-service practice, so we don’t accept dental insurance. We’ll always review the cost of your treatment with you before proceeding, so there are no surprises. Our team is happy to answer cost questions when you call.
What if I have severe tooth pain after hours?+
If you’re experiencing severe pain outside of our office hours, call our main number at (512) 476-2336. For life-threatening situations such as significant swelling affecting your airway or breathing, go to your nearest emergency room immediately. For non-life-threatening after-hours emergencies, we’ll do our best to connect you with guidance and get you scheduled first thing when the office opens.
