As with Bone Grafting, Sinus Lifts are a graft procedure that specifically targets the upper region of the jaw, where the sinuses reside. These procedures involve physically raising the sinus, or adding bone tissue to increase the structure and stability of the sinuses and jaw so that implants can be viably placed.
Patients who are missing teeth in the upper jaw may require a Sinus Lift procedure due to several factors, which include:
- Missing teeth in the back of the upper jaw, where the bone itself is thinner than it is in the front.
- Bone loss due to missing teeth. Once teeth have been removed, bone may be reabsorbed back into the body. The longer that teeth have been missing, the more likely this is to occur.
- Sinuses which are too close to the upper jaw. In some cases, anatomical issues would lead to complications if dental implants were placed, which is when Dr. Patel may recommend a Sinus Lift.
Every dental procedure is important in terms of the care and precision required, and oral bone grafting is no exception. Dr. Patel and the staff at Austin Cosmetic are trained to handle the procedure, and have done so successfully for many different patients of differing dental histories.
The first step will be to schedule a consultation with Dr. Patel. You may have already had a Sinus Lift recommended if you have considered dental implants on the upper jaw of the mouth, but an examination will determine how successful the procedure will be in getting the results you want.
The next step will be preparation. As with any oral surgery, patients will receive important information on how to best prepare on the days leading up to the procedure. On the day of the procedure itself, Dr. Patel and the staff at Austin Cosmetic will make sure that you are as comfortable as possible, including the availability of IV sedation and other forms of pain management.
Afterward, there will be follow up care and examinations to determine if the graft was successful, and to make sure that there isn’t any infection, inflammation or other health concerns.
